School Based Health
As part of our mission to better serve the people
of Lincoln County, LPCC now sponsors three school based health centers
located Lincoln County High, Duval Middle/Elementary, & Guyan
Valley Middle schools. The purpose of our school based health centers
is to offer students easier access to healthcare and to provide
consistent treatment while remaining in school.
School-based health centers are health clinics located
in or near schools that provide preventive and primary care to students.
Currently, 45 school-based health centers provide care to students
in 56 schools in 22 counties. Services provided at school-based
health centers include health education, treatment of acute illness,
and management of chronic illness. Some school-based health centers
also provide dental services, and mental health services such as
grief counseling, bullying and suicide prevention.
School-based heath centers require a signed parental
consent form before students can be provided services. In WV, 80%
of all students with a school-based health center located in their
school have a signed parental consent form. School-based health
centers, work with, but do not replace the child’s physician
or school nurse. The centers also link or serve as the child’s
medical home if they do not have one. In addition to providing health
care to children who many not otherwise seek care, WV’s school-based
health centers provide children with easier access to care. Last
year, there were more than 67,000 student visits recorded during
the school year. In addition to the in-school student visits, there
were 6,965 visits by in-school faculty and staff, other area students
and community members. Studies by John Hopkins University and others
show that school-based health centers decrease absenteeism and tardiness,
reduce school discipline and behavior problems and save money by
reducing the number of emergency room visits for the wrong reasons.
Lincoln Primary Care Center opened its first school
based health center at Guyan Valley in 1995. Since then Lincoln
Primary has added two additional school based health centers at
the new Lincoln County High School and Duval Middle/Elementary School.
